Our purpose for presenting a section of our life with our cockatoo is to illustrate the level of commitment necessary and the true difficulties that can (and most often do) arise when living with a larger bird. The advice is meant to inspire people to delay or forget about buying a parrot (if they are doing so without fully knowing the responsibility involved) and to seek help and try proven techniques in dealing with problems that arise with birds rather than getting rid of them. PLEASE CONSULT REPUTABLE AND PROFESSIONAL AVIAN BEHAVIORISTS AND INFORMATION SOURCES FOR THE LATEST IN BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION AND BIRD-RAISING TECHNIQUES.
Be kind to your bird and find out what he is trying to tell you! We admit that we were not able to "raise" Rocky and teach him right from wrong without discipline. We just want to express concern that the right kind of discipline is used. Avian behaviorists can instruct how to best deal with a bird without hurting them. We offer a few of our tricks that we learned along the way - some from behavior experts and some from common sense of how we would deal with a human 2-year-old who was trying to get his way! Yes...even some of Dr. Phil's techniques work with a spoiled cockatoo! We definitely did not do everything "right". We did what worked for us based on reading and attending seminars given by bird behavior experts. Please follow the guidance of a trained professional.
Disclaimer: The writer(s) are not responsible for unforeseen problems that may arise from following the advice given here. It is meant to illustrate the kind of time and understanding you need to invest in a bird. The assumption is that some people will disagree with the theories and techniques written about here...and that's OK. There are many ways to work with and live with a bird. The idea is to get more people knowing that it is a big investment in time and energy and fewer unwanted birds living in bird rescues.
